The Speed Building Mindset
Speed in shorthand comes from three things: accuracy, familiarity, and muscle memory. You cannot rush the process, but you can make it more efficient.
The Four Stages of Speed
Stage 1: Foundation (0-60 WPM)
Focus entirely on accuracy. Write slowly and correctly.
- Duration: 4-8 weeks
- Daily practice: 45 minutes
Stage 2: Building (60-80 WPM)
Introduce timed drills. Start to abbreviate common words.
- Duration: 4-6 weeks
- Daily practice: 60 minutes
Stage 3: Intermediate (80-100 WPM)
Focus on phrasing and common word groups.
- Duration: 6-8 weeks
- Daily practice: 90 minutes
Stage 4: Advanced (100-120+ WPM)
High-speed dictation and transcription under pressure.
- Duration: Ongoing
- Daily practice: 90+ minutes
Proven Drill Techniques
1. The Pyramid Method
Practice a sentence at slow speed, then progressively faster:
- Read-write at 40 WPM
- Read-write at 60 WPM
- Read-write at 80 WPM
- Repeat until comfortable
2. Chunking
Break sentences into meaningful chunks and practice each chunk separately before combining.
3. Phrase Drilling
Identify the 100 most common phrases in your target language and drill them until automatic.
Common Speed Barriers
- The 80 WPM plateau — Most learners stall here; increase dictionary (known outlines)
- Hesitation — Caused by uncertainty; drill hesitated words specifically
- Fatigue — Build hand endurance gradually
